Course Overview

Fire detection and protection systems play a critical role in protecting employees, facilities, equipment, and business operations. When properly designed, installed, inspected, and maintained, these systems can provide early warning of a developing fire, support safe evacuation, and help control or suppress a fire before it spreads.

This training is intended for:

  • Warehouse and distribution center employees
  • Facility and building maintenance personnel
  • Manufacturing and production supervisors
  • Warehouse and operations managers
  • Safety coordinators and safety managers
  • Property and facility managers
  • Employees responsible for monitoring or coordinating fire protection system maintenance
  • Employers seeking a better understanding of facility fire protection

Fire Detection Systems

Early detection is essential to reducing the potential consequences of a workplace fire.

This section introduces common detection technologies, including smoke detectors, heat detectors, flame detectors, and specialized gas detection systems.

Participants will learn how detection equipment communicates with fire alarm control panels and why proper placement, inspection, testing, and maintenance are important to system reliability.

Fire Alarm and Notification Systems

Fire alarm systems provide warnings that allow occupants to respond to developing emergencies.

Participants will examine the basic components of fire alarm systems, including manual pull stations, alarm control panels, horns, strobes, monitoring equipment, and emergency notification devices.

The course also addresses the importance of recognizing system trouble conditions and promptly reporting equipment deficiencies.

Automatic Sprinkler Systems

Automatic sprinkler systems are among the most widely used forms of building fire protection.

This section introduces the operation of wet-pipe, dry-pipe, preaction, and deluge systems.

Participants will learn how sprinkler systems respond to fire conditions, the importance of adequate water supplies, and how storage arrangements, blocked sprinkler discharge patterns, and system impairments can affect fire protection.

Special attention is given to warehouse and distribution environments, including storage racks, ceiling heights, commodity classifications, and high-piled storage considerations.

Special Hazard Fire Suppression Systems

Some facilities contain equipment, processes, or materials requiring specialized fire suppression systems.

Participants will receive an introduction to clean agent systems, carbon dioxide systems, dry chemical systems, and other specialized protection methods.

The course explains why suppression systems must be appropriate for the hazards being protected and maintained in accordance with applicable requirements.

Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance

Fire protection systems must remain operational and capable of performing their intended functions.

Participants will learn the importance of scheduled inspections, testing, maintenance documentation, deficiency reporting, and system impairment procedures.

The course also explains the difference between routine employee observations and technical inspections or testing that must be performed by appropriately qualified personnel.

Applicable OSHA and NFPA Standards

This course introduces relevant requirements and guidance, including:

Applicable requirements depend on the facility, equipment, occupancy, adopted codes, and jurisdiction.

Course Completion and Certificate

Participants must complete the required training material and successfully pass the final examination with a minimum score of 80%.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from First Coast Warehouse Safety Training.

This course provides foundational education concerning fire detection and protection systems. It does not qualify participants to design, install, inspect, test, repair, or certify fire protection systems where specialized qualifications or licensing are required.

Training Services

First Coast Warehouse Safety Training provides practical workplace safety education for employees, supervisors, facility managers, and organizations throughout Northeast and Central Florida and South Georgia.

Our goal is to help organizations strengthen their understanding of fire protection systems, recognize potential deficiencies, and support safer workplace operations.
